Have you ever been in a work environment that just didn’t sit right with you?
Maybe you couldn’t put your finger on it at first, but something in your spirit kept telling you, “This isn’t where you’re meant to be.” For weeks, maybe months, you brushed off that feeling, thinking, “Maybe it’ll get better,” or “Maybe I’m overthinking.”
But deep down, you knew.
That’s what we often call a “gut feeling,” but in truth, it’s often God whispering to us, guiding us to move before things get worse.
I want to share a personal experience about trusting that feeling and walking away from a toxic workplace.
Leaving wasn’t easy—it rarely is. But when God says, “It’s time to go,” you have to listen, even when it doesn’t make sense in the moment. Let me tell you, the moment I stepped away, it all became so clear why that nudge was there all along.
Recognizing the Signs
Toxic work environments can show up in many ways—poor communication, lack of organization, unethical behavior, or just an overwhelming sense of negativity. In my case, it became evident when I decided to leave. Instead of professionalism and integrity during my exit, I was met with silence, disrespect, and disorganization. Emails went unanswered, my last paycheck was delayed, and I was abruptly locked out of essential accounts.
The experience solidified why I needed to leave—this was not a space aligned with my values or my purpose. Sometimes, we try to convince ourselves to stay in environments like this. We think about the bills, the responsibilities, or even the guilt of leaving. But the truth is, staying in a toxic space only erodes your peace, your joy, and your ability to serve God’s purpose in your life.
God’s Voice vs. Fear
When we hear that inner voice telling us to move, it’s easy to confuse it with fear or overthinking. But here’s how you can tell the difference:
- God’s voice doesn’t create chaos in your mind; it brings clarity.
- He’ll often show you things you’ve been trying to ignore—the dishonesty of leaders, the unhealthy culture, or the way you’re being undervalued.
These revelations aren’t meant to scare you; they’re meant to prepare you.
In my case, I realized that God had been nudging me to leave long before I took the step. He showed me the lack of integrity, the lies, and the disorganization that permeated the workplace. It was as if He was saying, “You don’t belong in this.” But sometimes, we’re too afraid of the unknown to move, so we stay until things get unbearable.
The Cost of Staying vs. The Freedom of Leaving
Staying in a place where you’re not meant to be comes at a high cost. It drains your mental health, your energy, and sometimes even your faith. For me, staying would have meant continuing to subject myself to a culture of dishonesty and disrespect—a place that contradicted everything I stand for.
Walking away wasn’t easy. There were moments of doubt and fear. But the peace I felt after leaving was undeniable. It was like a weight had been lifted. That’s the thing about following God’s guidance—it doesn’t always make sense in the moment, but it always leads to something better.
Scriptural Reminder
One verse that gave me strength during this time was Proverbs 3:5-6:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
Sometimes, trusting God means stepping into the unknown, believing that He’s already prepared the way for you. It means letting go of what’s familiar, even if it’s toxic, and trusting that He has something far greater in store.
Lessons Learned
- Listen to Your Gut (and God): That persistent feeling isn’t random. It’s often God trying to protect you from harm or prepare you for something greater.
- Trust the Process: Leaving may come with challenges, but staying in a toxic environment costs far more in the long run.
- Value Integrity: Surround yourself with people and workplaces that align with your values. Don’t settle for less.
- Let Go with Grace: Even if you’re treated poorly during your exit, don’t let it define you. Hold on to your integrity and trust that God sees everything.
Final Thoughts
- If you’ve been feeling that nudge to leave a toxic situation—whether it’s a job, a relationship, or something else—take some time to pray and reflect.
- Ask God for clarity and courage.
- When He tells you to move, trust that He’s leading you to a place of peace, purpose, and fulfillment.
Walking away isn’t always easy, but staying in the wrong place will never lead you to the right destination. Trust your gut. Trust God. And don’t be afraid to take that step of faith.
