From the Track to Therapy: My Journey with Anxiety and How Seeking Help Changed My Life

August 24, 2024by Ekundayo Sogbesan

During my high school years, I was a standout student-athlete in Maryland, setting state records and earning a full athletic scholarship to attend Morgan State University a Historically Black College and University (HBCU).

Running was more than just a sport; it was my passion and my identity. However, beneath the surface of victories and accolades, I struggled with something I couldn’t quite grasp—anxiety.

Competing on the track, I often ran the same race over and over. Despite my physical preparation, each race was accompanied by an internal battle that left me feeling confused. I thought I was simply scared, but the source of this fear was elusive. Sometimes, the anxiety would overwhelm me and result in poor performance. Other times, I’d manage to perform well despite the inner turmoil. It was a perplexing and exhausting experience.

I didn’t understand at the time that what I was experiencing was anxiety. The fear and panic I felt before races were not just nerves—they were symptoms of a deeper issue. It wasn’t until after graduation, when I sought therapy on my own, that I gained clarity. Therapy helped me recognize that my struggles were not personal failings but rather a common challenge many face.

Through therapy, I learned to navigate my anxiety and its impact on my life. I discovered that anxiety didn’t have to control me. With the right support and coping strategies, I could regain a sense of peace and live with greater courage. This journey of self-discovery transformed my life, turning my past struggles into a source of strength.

Now, as a licensed clinician, I am committed to helping others who face similar challenges. I understand how isolating and overwhelming anxiety can be, and I know the importance of seeking help.

Therapy is not just about addressing issues; it’s about equipping yourself with the tools and support needed to manage and overcome them.

If you are struggling with anxiety or any other mental health concerns, remember that you don’t have to face this journey alone. Seeking therapy can provide you with the support and understanding you need to navigate your experiences. There is hope, and there is healing!
